Why Am I Eating So Much?
Do you often find yourself munching and gobbling away like a machine with no Stop button? Why are you displaying this behavior? What are the reasons for this behavior and how do I tackle it? While this is not something new, there are certain factors which might be influencing you to pick up that spoon and fork when you know you shouldn’t.
- Have you started skipping meals?
Skipping meals is not known to carry with it any benefits of any kind, if at all; it further increases your hunger at the end of the day. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone which stimulates your appetite, and it peaks just before meals and falls after a meal. So, if you happen to skip any one of your meals, ghrelin is produced in a greater quantity leading you to eat more than what you anticipated. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to consume all your meals at the right time of the day. Most people tend to skip out their breakfast, which in turn leads them to consume abnormally large amounts of food during the course of the day.
- Stress could be the Culprit.
When you are under Stress your body tries to seek reward and comfort itself, it does so by releasing a hormone called cortisol. The higher the stress, the more cortisol is produced. Food is by far the most popular comforter, it is thus no surprise that when under stress food comes as the ultimate comforter. To control yourself from eating food when under stress, channel your emotions by engaging in other activities such as going for a walk, listening to music, calling up a friend or going to the gym.
- You might just be Dehydrated and Thirsty.
In many cases, thirst is commonly mistaken for hunger. When what we actually need is a good serving of fluids into our body, we satiate it with food. Water plays a very crucial part in our overall well being, it aids in breathing, digestion and a host of other metabolic activities. Therefore, Water should be consumed without any reservations, and one must make sure to keep a bottle of water handy when hunger strikes.
- A Mixture of Unhealthy habits.
Unhealthy habits might also be playing a role in your uncontrolled food binge. Not getting enough sleep leads to decrease in the secretion of leptin, a hormone to control appetite. A healthy individual should get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily. Watching the television while eating can also lead you to eat more without you even knowing. Consuming Alcohol on a daily basis also hinders your judgement leading you to consume more unhealthy snacks leading to a vicious cycle. Bad habits are easy to form but very hard to break, therefore it is of utmost importance to rationally think over an action before it becomes a habit.
- Are you leading a Sedentary Lifestyle?
Not doing anything at all is one of the worst things you can do to your body. Leading a sedentary lifestyle has a number of serious risks which include obesity, increased risks of Alzheimer’s disease, increased blood sugar levels, mobility problems etc. When you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you adopt food as your companion and start depending on it to fulfill your needs. As such it is of utmost importance to do some sort of physical activity or the other in order to keep you occupied.
- You may be on the Wrong Diet.
More often than not we usually do not take into account the types of food we put into our bodies and might be blindly consuming nutrient empty of deprived foods on a daily basis. Eating too many carbohydrates leads to the absorption of sugars, leading to the increase of insulin in our system which triggers hunger. When you start to consume foods which are more nutrient-laden, which contains more quantity of protein, fiber and essential vitamins and minerals, you tend to feel fuller for a longer period of time.
- You might be eating just for the Sake of Eating.
Many people have the habit of eating just for the sake of eating, rather than eating to serve a purpose. This is termed as Non-hungry eating. As bizarre and harmless as it sounds, this type of eating can lead to unnecessary calorie intake and can cause diseases in the long run. This type of behavior is dangerously easy to take up, however notoriously hard to let go. Therefore, it is of absolute importance that this habit must be identified at the early stages and every effort must be taken to break it.
